What is a Shaman?
Shaman (pronounced SHAH-maan) is a word from the language of the Tungus people of Siberia, and has been widely adopted in Western culture to describe a person who was previously known by such names as "witch", "Witchdoctor", "medicine man", and many more. One of the advantages of using the term shaman is that it lacks any prejudice. Furthermore, not every kind of medicine man/woman is a shaman.
A shaman is a man/woman who enters an altered state of consciousness-at will- to contact and utilize an ordinarily hidden reality in order to help his/her client/patient. The shaman has at least one, but usually more, "spirits", in his/her personal service.
The shaman specializes in a trance during which his soul is considered to leave his body and ascend to the upperworld or descend to the underworld, in his/her trance, he/she commonly works to heal by restoring lost power or by extracting harmful power.
For the shaman to work with a patient/client, he/she, must know a little of the problem that the patient/client wishes to resolve, it could be "soul retrieval" or helping them to find a power animal, perhaps they are finding difficult to meet their animal the shaman can journey along side them to help them, this can be a very powerful experience.
Therefore it is important that the patient/client has great trust in the shaman they are working with, therefore if you do not feel that trust factor then listen to your instinct perhaps that shaman is not the one for you and you need to find another one.
I hope that this has given you some insight into the work of a shaman.
