I have a small area in the corner of my study - it's a piece of plywood that has curved edge and is covered with an old red velvet dress that I cut up!
Mine is about 3 inches off the floor, as I like sitting on the floor.

I feel the most important thing about an altar is that you have what *you* feel drawn to. There is no right or wrong here, there is nothing you *should* have and also, don't make up your mind to just go and do it in one go - My altar evolves all the time depending on where I am at in my life.

At the moment I have a small piece of wood with several candles on it which I light whenever I sit next to the altar. Actually, candles feature quite heavily - there are around 10 on there and I light different ones at different times. I have a photo of me with my Grandmother and some images that I fell in love with on various postcards - flowers, trees, wise women etc.
Some pinecones, feathers etc that I collected when pregnant and offereings that my daughter keeps giving me. A couple of crystals and a statue of a shepherd!

There is no reason behind anything on there other than they are special to me in one way or another.

Within easy reach I have some inspirational reading or a deck of angel or faery cards and some paper and a pen.

I don't always do anything specific at my altar; I just like to sit there and 'be'
Have fun and be creative; you'll know what is right for you

I have 2 altars one on my windowsil for the Goddess and God and another one across from the door dedicated specifically to my Patron Goddess Tiamat thats on a large chest that I keep most of my witchy supplys in. Both of them hae statues to help me focus on my intent and plants purely to have something living there. My windowsil altar is the one all my ritual tools live on so it tends to be the one I sit at for any meditation with a purpose. The Tiamat one I use if I just want to meditate in general or want to talk to My Lady. Altars are so versitile though you shouldnt worry about what to put on it or what to do at it just go with what your drawn to.

I have an alter. Its the top of the chests that I keeps all my ritual stuff in. On top is all my ritual tools, my crystal skull and a dragon wall plate. I also have my Books of shadows under the alter.
I'd post a pic of it, but I'm not sure how...
I also have a shrine. Its on top of one of my sterio speakers. I have a small statue of Shiva and tons of little crystals surrounding it.

Not got an alter or anything like that.................yet!

Doing up the house at the mo, so when the bedroom is done, I may very well put one in there!

I like the ideas of just things that are special to you, I've got plenty of that kind of thing around the house!

I share a bedroom with someone who might not be very happy if I set up an altar, although i would very much like one. Anyway the kitten would destroy it! So when I celebrate a sabbat, and its blowing a gale outside and I don't fancy doing it on the beach, I use Red Feather's bedroom and her altar. Its not 'mine' though, so any ideas for how to set up something unobtrusive? I'd really like something permanent. Maybe something on the dashboard of my car...

I know very little about alters etc, but from my limited knowledge I agree with you Rae, in that an alter should be exactly what and where you want it to be because it feels write for you. I adore Angels and have devoted a window sill in my front room to my collection, I have never actualy considered it to be an alter but on reflection I guess it is.

I'm not sure of the items you would want to have on your alter Crystallline, but how about making a "non-obvious" display, so it appears as if it is simply ornaments in your bedroom, mingle a couple of nice candles or flowers amongst your possessions, and say nothing..(you now what men are like, if you say nothing he may not even notice) then when you want to use can simply re-arrange a few things to turn into a proper alter. Just a thought.

And not a bad idea at that, SA!

I have come to the stage where should build an Angel alter for the course i am taking, eventually i will be doing Angel magic/spells ohmy.gif at this alter.

But where, i would like it to be near where i meditate but the only place there would be on top of the wine rack huh.gif .

Reading Dianas book there was a neat idea of a lovely bowl with a candle in it and you would lovingly write the names of people to send Angel healing too and put the paper in the bowl until the healing is done, then burn the piece of paper with the name when no longer needed.

things i am reading lead me to believe that my dressing table is already the alter i need but i am supposed to be able to spend 10 minutes a day at my alter praying.

I do Reiki in bed either before or after sleep, but i do not want to invite spirit into my bedroom i feel i have spent my whole life asking them to leave and do not want to undo any good work i have managed till now. But Angels arent spirit, g.gif im starting to get confused and will maybe have a tidy up and do my dressing table and see how things go laugh.gif

Is there no hope for me.

Go with whatever feels right for you, not according to a book.

My whole house is my altar. I have a windowsill or shelf or table in each room that serves as an altar to something or other.

You don't have to be restricted to a specific place, if it doesn;t feel right for you.

Maybe you are like me and feel like you want to spread out a bit and not have one room as an altar.

If you don't want to have things in your bedroom, then don't. My bedroom has become my place for all things Native American (for now) as I want to connect with my guide while I am sleeping - and I do!

When I feel the need to change this focus I will move these things to another room and will bring something else in, or leave it bare exceot for a few sleep enhancing crystals.

My healing and online room is full of amethyst, rose quartz, larimar, crystals to connect me to the higher realms, with incense and sage, a nice comfy sofa too. This is my place to retreat to, and doesn't really change, the windowsill is my altar and these things move around and get added to but essentially the feel stays the same.

Whatever feels right to you Sue.. go with it ! smile.gif
